Good footwear is necessary and the path is strenuous in parts, involving even some use of the hands. We preferred this part, but sometimes there is a strong current here, even when there are no waves.īesides swimming there is also the option to go for a hike through a forest of pine, then Phoenician juniper up to the islands peak (197m). At the backside is another area for wimming, not organized and more quiet, but no sand either (and no shade). There is no sand and only one spot to go into the water, but the swimming is pleasant. The organized part with umbrellas, sunbeds (5€ the set), a canteen and restrooms (but no showers) is in a bay of a small peninsula. The last two come out of their hiding places in the evening, when the staff of the canteen, before their departure, leave out some food for them. In the old days there was a camping site, but now it is a nature reserve, to which they have brought peacocks (easily seen), fallow deer and kri-kri, the Cretan wild goat. We usually went on the first boat of the day at 9.45am, which gets also used by staff of the canteen, since nobody is allowed to stay overnight on Moni. Boats holding 20 people go from there about every half hour in 10 minutes to the pier at Moni Island (a return ticket is 5€). There are a few boats going there directly from Aegina town (9€), but we preferred to take a taxi (14€, the bus for 1.80€ is often too full) to Perdikka. While tourists flock to Santorini and Mykonos, Aegina offers a Greek experience that is relatively free from the tourist resort feel of some of the other Greek islands. A great day trip out of Aegina is a visit to the small uninhabited island of Moni in the southwest. Aegina is the perfect destination for remote workers and digital nomads or those who have time to explore the less-known islands of Greece.
